What to do with trends on social media as a brand

I don’t mean trends like what is happening in the industry or things to pay attention to in the decade. I mean those content that go viral and become a trend or challenge, like ‘Charlie Charlie’ and ‘boss it’.
I find a lot of businesses jumping on these trends inappropriately and in ways that don’t help them.
It’s okay to jump on a trend and create content from it but you have to ask a few questions especially if you have a fairly engaging audience.
Who is my audience and why do they follow me?
Before you jump on a trend in any way, make sure it’s the best decision for your audience because you serve them (as a business), so, if the trend does not alight with the goal for which they follow you, you might want to let it go. You don’t want to go ‘Charlie Charlie’ on a bunch of intellectuals.
Will the content promote how I want to be perceived?
Your brand persona should guide you when shipping content. If you want to be perceived as the fun guy, then, you need fun content, if you want to be seen as the intellectual, you need intellectual content, so, the question is: will the trend promote how you want your audience to see you?
How controversial is it?
Be careful with controversial stuff, you really don’t want to gamble on those. If you are not sure, let it go
Can I make it useful and meaningful?
This is the best part because if you can be creative with a trend, you can make it into anything useful and meaningful because everyone may not want something playful, intellectual, etc. but everyone wants something useful.
So, jump on the trend or tweak it to fit your goals, matter of fact, you should! But only if you make it align with your goals and appeal to your audience, and if you can’t, let it go.
Share this with someone if it helped you.
